For many years, IMC has combined high-performance servomotors with traditional cam-actuated index drives to provide:
In addition to the traditional indexer solution shown on the right, IMC offers the Flex-i-Dex, providing a large through-hole, flexible motion and a large output bearing support.
The key difference between the two is Flex-i-Dex eliminates the speed reducer gearbox located between the motor and the indexer, eliminating issues related to gear backlash. Backlash from the gearbox, however, is minimal and not significant in most applications. This backlash is further reduced by the reduction ratio - typically 16:1 or 12:1 - provided by the indexer stage.
Using an indexer with a constant lead cam has several advantages:

A company that wanted to improve quality and productivity while reducing floor-space requirements on an assembly line turned to DE-STA-CO’s Robohand products for help.
The firm needed an automatic station that would pneumatically locate, grip and transfer five air injector subassemblies from an in-feed conveyor to an indexing dial table assembly station.
DE-STA-CO provided the company with a Robohand double wedge parallel gripper that features customized jaws for accurate, reliable positioning. As a result, the company has more than doubled productivity and realized zero changeover time. In addition, DE-STA-CO’s customer has dramatically reduced rejects caused by material handling.

Auburn Hills, Mich.-based DE-STA-CO, which designs and makes clamping, gripping, transfer and robotic tooling products, acquired Industrial Motion Control (IMC) in December.
“IMC’s products serve a variety of attractive end markets and are a key upfront consideration in the design of new industrial automation systems,” says DE-STA-CO President Pat Carroll. “Their products’ strong brand names and channels, combined with early visibility into industrial automation project requirements, will pull through additional DE-STA-CO automation products.”
Adds IMC President Jeff Peterson, “We are very excited about this new partnership, knowing that DE-STA-CO products complement IMC’s product portfolio.”
IMC will be part of DE-STA-CO’s Automation group, which includes Robohand grippers, linear slides, tooling end effectors, and modular belt conveyors.
